Walk through hospital halls and you mostly will find patients who are older than 65. With the graying of America, some forward-thinking hospitals are dedicating resources to assess and treat the specific needs of geriatric patients. Studies show elderly people have unique issues that must be considered when healthcare is provided. They often respond to procedures and metabolize medications differently, endure one or more chronic conditions, and may suffer from a litany of ailments, such as malnutrition, incontinence, depression, constipation, and sleep deprivation. Dr. Elizabeth Capezuti has been named the Dr. John W. Rowe Professor in Successful Aging(Posted 1/2009)

Dr. Elizabeth Capezuti has been named the Dr. John W. Rowe Professor in Successful Aging at the College of Nursing at New York University. Dr. Capezuti was promoted to full professor this September 1, 2008. Dr. Capezuti has made significant contributions to improving the quality of life of older adults. Throughout the last decade, she led several research studies demonstrating that restraint/siderail reduction can be achieved without increases in fall or injury rates. Widely cited data-based articles in major national and international gerontological journals reporting these positive outcomes have established her unique contribution to gerontological science. This work supports national and international initiatives to improve patient safety by preventing complications frequently associated with institutionalization or hospitalization of frail older adults due to restraint immobilization. These complications are known to reduce quality of life and contribute to higher health care costs for older adults. The research has influenced changes in clinical standards including governmental regulations that limit restraint use and have led to improved patient outcomes. Her work has been acknowledged and affirmed by her peers through her status as a member of the American Academy of Nursing and the numerous awards and lectureships she has received. At this time in history where we can expect a dramatic demographic shift, given the aging of America, NYUCN is positioned as the leading academic nursing center and this chair will acknowledge
Dr. Capezuti's academic leadership and excellence.
